5Worth upgrading for the GPU rendering

I upgraded from version 11 to 12 to improve the rendering speed. Version 12 is a 64-bit application and also includes the ability to use the GPU (graphics card) to render. I've not been disappointed. Rendering time for a sample video went from 33 minutes with version 11 to 13 minutes using version 12, once I found the place to turn GPU rendering on. (On the render dialog, select Customize Template, see the drop down box near the bottom of the Video tab. My Radeon graphics card uses the OpenCL setting. I believe Nvidia cards use the CUDA setting.)

I haven't noticed any problems and my version 11 files have been opened with no problems. Version 12 also includes a preferences file for my Shuttle Express controller. The sound effects shipped with version 12 appear to be the same as those from version 11. Most of the music is also the same, but there are a few new tracks.

Prospective new users need to realize that while this is "consumer" level software, it is quite high-end and does have a fairly steep learning curve. If you are only looking to put together a few clips of a dance recital, there are probably better and easier choices.

4No NewBlueFX effects.

Pros: Powerful. Price if you get it on sale. Comes with Dvd architect, which you can use to create your very own DVD with a custom menu.

CONS: Pretty much every thing else not put in a pro.

According to every Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 Suite description, it comes with New Blue FX effects except this download from Amazon. Although I can't confirm this. After extensive searching I did finally find a download that will accept the key I received in my email. It installs and everything. However, it crashes SMSPS when ever you select an effect to add to your project. So far the New Blue FX effects won't work.

I havn't been able to find a download for the Voice remover which seems to be the only thing Audio Forge would be good for. Although I did find a thing on Sony's site that said it should have arrived with the Serial key in the email. However, that was if you bought it from Sony.

This note is at the bottom of the product description. Which I'm almost positive was not there when I bought this product on August 8, 2013.

Amazon really needs to update the description on this product since it mentions NewBlueFX atleast 4 times before you get to the *Note. So if you're one of those people that doesn't read all the way through you may be disappointed if you were looking forward to the newblueFX.

Any way, I've been taught a lesson. Don't buy downloadable software from any one but the original company. Atleast I saved a few bucks. Or did I? Also my 4 star rating is based on Sony Movie Studio 12 and DVD Architect, not the entire Suite.

3Quick (possible) remedy for NewBlueFX serial number problem

I will be changing this review after I give the software a shakedown, but I thought I'd post this little tidbit while it's still fresh in my mind.

I had trouble entering the supplied serial number for the NewBlueFX add-on. It kept telling me my serial number was bad. After extensive searching online, with no success, I decided to try a more creative solution. The last digit of my serial number was a zero. I considered that a bit odd, so I just changed the last digit using the numbers 1 thru 9 until it suddenly accepted it!

If you have the same problem, this solution might be worth a shot. :)
