Newbie's review of Sony Vegas Pro 12

I bought Vegas Pro 12 from Sony's site, because I had v 9 and qualified for an upgrade price. Before v 12, I had very limited editing experience. I'd recently hired a professional crew to shoot educational video clips for my business. It was a simple shoot, just me in front of the camera answering questions. I thought, "I'll edit these videos with version 9."
But the crew gave me P2 files, which is a much higher quality format since they used a professional camera. Rather than ask them to convert P2 into a lower quality format that v 9 could read, I upgraded to v 12 so I could join the modern world and not worry about file formats.

Pros
- v 12 has so many options! And if it doesn't have the option you want, you can get software that works with Vegas Pro. Ex. I was just on Sony's site and saw an article on their tight integration with Hit Film, a tool that creates 2D and 3D Hollywood-quality visual effects. It's too fancy for me, but who knows, maybe later I'll want to create a rain sequence without needing to film a grey sky and rain.
- v 12 imports many file formats (i.e., P2!) directly into the software without some conversion process. Don't quote me on this, but I think that some competitors need to convert files before you can start editing, and that's a pain.
- Vegas Pro began life as an audio editor, and as any good video editor knows, audio is a huge part of video.
- Excellent multi-camera editing. If you're integrating video from multiple cameras, you'll love this feature. I watched a tutorial and was impressed at how quickly the guy could edit four different cameras.
- Multiple editing workflows for faster editing. If I recall, there are three basic workflow options, and when I'm more advanced, I'll be able to edit faster by knowing all three workflow options instead of the one I'm using.
- Value for the money. When I bought v 9 years ago, I heavily researched software and chose Vegas Pro. It had the best balance of professional functions I could grow into yet with a price I could afford. V 12 is still a good value.
- Can be used on less powerful computers.
Cons
- Steep learning curve. Vegas Pro isn't for newbies unless you're really willing to put in the time and are okay with frustration. I've been pretty lucky so far using the Web for figuring out things. Google and YouTube have shown me many free tutorials and user forums online, so I've barely used v 12's help function or its manual. I've been able to keep my sanity and most of my hair.
- Some professional environments will not like Vegas Pro. Some of the criticisms about Vegas Pro are valid, but I also believe part of it is the brand name. Some people only want to work with people who use Avid, Final Cut Pro, or Adobe.
- Low-quality interactive tutorials in the Help section. I got a lot more out of Google and YouTube/Vimeo.
I wish I could put more negatives, but so far I'm very happy with v 12. I may update this if my enthusiasm drops later.

Rating the product was tough, because Vegas Pro is all I know. And I'm not sure how to rate such a complex piece of software. So I'll go based on my gut, and my gut says 5 stars.
And to all of you video editors and production professionals, I salute you. After being on a professional set and learning video editing in my spare time the last few weeks, I now have a much deeper appreciation for the tough job that you have. Now when I watch TV or a movie, I understand how much work went into these productions.

I've been pretty happy with v 12. With that said, I've noticed in some Vegas Pro forums (e.g., forums.creativecow dot net) that other users haven't been so fortunate.
That site seems pretty active with Vegas Pro users. Since Amazon doesn't allow for the Web link, I'll put them in the comments section.
If you're having problems, I recommend going to other major forums as well to see how they solved their issues.
Before I upgraded from v 9 to v 12, I downloaded a trial copy of v 12 directly from Sony's site. I recommend prospective buyers do the same to ensure it works on your set up. It would stink to find out you have compatibility problems after paying money for it.
Here are a few issues with v 12 I've read about on the forums. For more information do a Google search.
- User with a powerful graphics card has issues with v 12. It has something to do with the card sucking so much from the power supply.
- Graphics card drivers - some needed to update the driver, and one user needed to roll back to an older driver (if I recall correctly; that's odd).
- User had to turn off GPU acceleration.
- User had to uninstall old versions of Vegas Pro (very unusual as normally you can run multiple versions).
- User had to get a different sound card.
From my quick read of various issues, it seems that incompatibility issues often arise from the graphics card. Even people with very powerful CPUs and high-end graphics cards can have compatibility issues with v 12.
I think Sony needs to improve their testing before releasing new versions of Vegas Pro. And Sony needs to give better support to users with compatibility issues. If Sony were to say here's a list of approved video cards with specific drivers or setting, or give a list of specific sound cards, etc., it would make life easier for users.
Anyhow, I'll get off my soapbox. I've been fortunate to have a stable v 12, and I just wish everyone else did, too.

[Update - software upgrade fixed issues] Different experience than the other reviewers, more common according to on-line forums

[Update: 4 Nov 2013: After the most recent software update from Sony, many of the earlier stability issues have receded.]
The installation went relatively smoothly. It is best if you have an active Internet connection.
Bringing media items into Vegas Pro was relatively easy.
Yes, as the other reviewers point out, there are a huge variety of options.
The problem comes with the outputs.
Eventually you have to stop dickering with a project and produce something.
I bought an HP Z800 with Quad processors, 6 Gbytes of RAM, a brand new installation of Win 7, etc. just to be able to use Sony products, including Vegas Pro.
[Update, with the software update, I have been able to produce movies. There are still some stability issues if you use video FX, but the product is much better. I recently did a four minute video and had to divide the four video tracks into three movies that were produced separately and then overlayed.]
In 25 projects, I have yet to be able to produce a single video file that is not seriously, seriously glitched in some way.
Often Vegas Pro simply freezes up, and the Task Monitor indicates that it is "not responding." Often the video will render, but then the video portion will "freeze" to a single frame while the audio continues playing.
I tried all of the on-line forums, changed settings to not use the GPU, to have zero memory set aside for previews, etc., but still not one single good video.
Much to my disappointment, the problems that I have having appear to be common in the on-line forums.
The one very good thing that comes with Vegas Pro is DVD Architect that allows a huge array of advanced techniques for producing DVDs. If it was not for this add-on then I would be giving this product two stars.
Try Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 Ultimate [OLD VERSION]. It always works like a champ.

Sony Vegas Pro 12 - What's New?

I've been using Sony Vegas editing software for a few years now. I recently just upgraded from Pro 10 32bit to the Vegas 12 64bit version. The first thing that I noticed was the dramatic increase in speed in both rendering and playback preview. Before the upgrade, if I had a lot of transitions or effects then the preview screen would become very jerky. Those problems are long gone after the upgrade to 12. Not sure how much of that has to do with the 32bit vs 64bit - or if it was because V12 is optimized.
Some other nice features include "Layer dimensionality" - a new feature that makes your Text really POP. You can now add Bevels & effects that make the text look a lot more professional looking.
The masking features have also been updated, although I don't tend to do a lot with that feature.
Overall I am pretty happy with Vegas 12. It is definitely an upgrade over what I had previously. I am a Commentator on Youtube, and I render several videos per week. So far, Vegas Pro 12 has been extremely reliable with very few hiccups.
